VIN Decoder

A VIN decoder breaks down a 17-character vehicle identification number to reveal the manufacturer, make, model, year, engine type, and other factory specifications. Use the free VIN check tool below to decode any VIN.
How a VIN Decoder Works
Each position in a VIN has a specific meaning. Positions 1-3 identify the world manufacturer identifier (WMI), positions 4-8 describe vehicle attributes like body style and engine type, position 9 is a check digit, position 10 indicates the model year, position 11 shows the assembly plant, and positions 12-17 are the serial number.
What a VIN Can Tell You
A VIN decoder can show you the vehicle's country of origin, manufacturer, make, model, model year, body class, engine specifications, transmission type, drive type, and assembly location. This information helps verify the vehicle matches what the seller claims.
Where to Find Your VIN
The VIN is usually located on the dashboard at the base of the windshield on the driver's side. It can also be found on the driver's door jamb, vehicle title, registration documents, and insurance cards.
